The Department of Crop Science focuses on studies relating to crop science for increased productivity.  The department is committed in achieving this by providing quality education in a broad spectrum of disciplines, namely plant structure and taxonomy, genetics and plant breeding, plant physiology, cropping systems, post harvest, agricultural biochemistry and seed science and technology.
 

The department consists of highly qualified staff members with expertise in various disciplines.  In combination with well-equipped laboratories and a wide range of sophisticated instruments, the department offers courses and conduct research related to crop science.
 

The objective of the department is to generate and disseminate knowledge in various fields of crop science for the development of tropical agriculture.

The Departments of Plant Protection emphasizes on education and technology towards solving pest problems using sustainable and integrated approaches. The approach undertaken is through the use of natural control agents strengthened using applied control measures such as cultural and biological. Major disciplines include entomology, plant pathology, weed science, pest management and vertebrate pest control.

 

The departments academic and support staff members are well qualified in their various fields of discipline. Courses in entomology, plant pathology and weed science are taught with emphasis on biology and management of pests and diseases. Research activities are focused on exploitation of natural and biological control agents integrated with chemical means. Laboratories are fitted with up-to-date equipments for teaching and research in microbiology, plant pathology, entomology, hematology and toxicology.
 

The Department aspires to excel in teaching, research and extension in tropical plant protection.

The Department of Land Management focuses on studies related to crop production and sustainable land development. The department comprises trained and experience academic staff and reliable supporting staff. Courses offered are in the fields of pedology, land use, soil physics, and conservation, soil chemistry, soil microbiology, soil fertility and management.
 

Research programs carried out by the academic staff include soil structure management, management of sliping land, amelioration of soil acidity, use of organic and inorganic soil amendments, heavy metal and environmental studies, efficiency of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers biological nitrogen fixation, phytohormone production, application of mychorrhiza, requirement of macro and micronutrients development of biofertilisers and site specific management. The department also provides consultation services and analysis of samples to interested agencies or individuals. Latest and sophisticated laboratory equipment are available for teaching, research and consultancy.

The Department of Animal Science focuses on studies in animal science, which contribute towards enhancing the efficient and sustainable production of animal products, which is currently greatly needed by the country. The approach is through reassessment and establishment of a competitive animal industry which is suited with the available resources.

The Department of Animal Science has well trained academic and support staff with expertise in various disciplines to carry out activities in teaching, research and consultancy. The courses offered and the researches conducted by the department are in the fields of animal science and livestock production, while consultancy services emphasize on animal production systems. The laboratories to undertake these activities have modern and up-to-date equipments.

The Department of Animal Science aims to become a center of excellence in animal production through teaching, research and consultancy activities in animal science and animal agriculture.

The Department of Agricultural Technology focuses on diversification, expansion anad integration of input science and technology to modernize, commercialize and maintain sustainability of agricultural productivity. Approach towards these goals is through an integration of high technology agriculture that optimizes product quality with mechanization and automation at all levels of agricultural production. It also moulds perceptive graduates who are able to contribute to the development of a modern and dynamic agricultural sector.

The staff of the Department of Agricultural Technology is comprised of trained and professional personnel to carry out the mission of the department. Courses offered in agricultural technology include farm mechanization, management and conservation, precision agricultural system, computerization in agricultural, agrobiotechnology, hydroponic technology, aeroponic, aquaculture, integrated agriculture, postharvest and management and technology transfer systems. Research focuses are on integration of agricultural technology inputs, adoption and dissemination of technology to increase production, conservation of resources, input cost reduction, and quality improvement of agricultural products. The department also conducts extension activity on transfer and application of technology to target groups.

 

The Department of Agricultural Technology’s mission is to be the center of excellence in introduction and expansion of the utilization of science and technology as well as strengthening of teaching and research in agricultural technology.

The Department of Agribusiness and Information Systems at Faculty of Agriculture, Universiti Putra Malaysia, was established in 1999. It was initially located at the Faculty of Economics. The Department offers courses in agribusiness and agricultural economics at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The Department also conducts research in agribusiness and agricultural finance, agricultural production, agricultural policy and international trade. Currently, the Department has 19 academis staff and five supporting staff.

 

The department’s objective is to become a center of excellence in agribusiness and agricultural economics education and research through teaching, research and advisory activities.
